NOTES FOR THE COSTUMES OF ATOMS (in French)
The idea came to me to create costumes for the two main characters, the two actors, Margot Crespon and Maxime Nourissat, in two color schemes that would symbolize their complementary ardors, 18th century costumes, to simple shirtsleeves from our 21st. Fiery red against their hearts, pink for the girl, blue for the boy to reinforce the idea of an experiment in human gender.
It was difficult to come up with costumes for the children because the actors play themselves at every age. We thought about toying with length, accessories, toys for example, and a gradual increase in the sexuality of the costumes which would undergo the same transformations as the bodies of the two children who grow into teens and then adults. The makeup and the wigs also helped play on set the chronology.
They are barefoot throughout the film. That’s the sign that they’re not yet completely civilized, a reference to Adam and Eve, or Paul and Virginie.
Even on the Paris pavement, they’re still wild children. Society hasn’t truly domesticated them by the end of the story.

The Makeup for Atoms
Just like the décor or costumes, the makeup is a tool with which to characterize the characters. It’s a fundamental artistic and technical discipline, especially on a film like Lightning. (Document in French).
